Is the funeral industry exploitative?

When I was researching my business plan for Bereavement Matters, an associate gave me this article saying “this is exactly why you are opening this business!” and where is some truth to that, I am not sure it is fair.

Funeral Directors are experts at what they do, and I believe they are genuinely in the service industry and trying to do what  people want. The problem is not with the funeral directors, it is with the fact that in most cases you only organise one or two funerals in your life, therefore most people come into the funeral process not knowing what their options are, what the process is and what the costs are likely to be.  That is where the idea of Bereavement Matters was born, we work closely with funeral directors, but we can help letting a client know what to expect BEFORE they find themselves in a position like the lady writing the article.

Our philosophy is to help people get the funeral they want, whether it be a “paint the town red – this is my last goodbye!!”, a celebration of a persons life, or a quiet reflection with just a few close friends and family.
